5 Underappreciated Moving Tips
Moving from one home into another is always a time of both excitement and stress. There is so much to do and remember that sometimes even the simplest tasks can seem overwhelmingly difficult.
In order to help you out during this stressful time, we’ve put together this list of underappreciated and extremely useful moving tips!
- Pack smart
- Wires
- Drawers
- Labeling
- Always label multiple sides of each box. This way you will know what is inside each one without having to move them around to find the labels.
- Write down which room each box belongs to. This will save you time when unpacking as each box will already be sorted somewhat. This is especially important if you are getting help moving.
- Keep an inventory of boxes. The biggest fear of most homeowners during a move is that something important will get left behind and the best way to combat this is to number all boxes and keep a running list. As they are loaded and unloaded from the truck, check them off your list so you know everything has arrived safely!
- Garbage bins
One of the most frustrating and time consuming parts of any move is finding enough boxes in the right sizes and strengths to transport all of your stuff. Luckily, there is a great, and often overlooked, source for strong, small boxes: your local liquor store!
Designed to carry a fair bit of weight without breaking, empty liquor and beer boxes are already equipped with handles and are easy to stack. Save them for heavy items like books for best use.
Another great packing tip is to use clear plastic garbage bags to transport your hanging clothing without wrinkling or wasting time. Simply slip the bag up over several hangers’ worth of clothes and secure it to the hangers. When you arrive at the other end, you can hang your clothes, whip off the bag, and you’re unpacked!
Before unplugging your computer, speakers, printer, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and any other electronics you may have, take some photographs of the wires so you can easily hook everything back up after moving. You may also wish to label each cord and mark on the power bar which one goes where for even faster hookups.
Why empty out all of your drawers only to put their contents in other boxes? Drawers are boxes! Simply remove them from the chest or cabinet, cover with plastic wrap to keep the contents inside and protected, and transport your belongings inside the drawers. Not only will this save time getting setup in your new home, it will make the chest much easier to carry and significantly lighter.
When labeling boxes, there are a few important things to keep in mind to make your life easier:
Renting garbage bins at both ends of your move is probably one of the most underappreciated moving tips, but it can save you a huge amount of time and hassle. When moving out, it provides an easy way to get rid of all the junk you don’t want to take with you. When moving, it is the best way to dispose of all those boxes, packing supplies, and any unwanted items that don’t quite fit in your new home.
